God Calls You Friend...Have You Answered?

“I am a friend of God…I am a friend of God, I am friend of God, He calls me friend.”

Do we REALLY know & understand that we are God’s friend? At times, these phrases become so rhetorical, second nature that the true meaning of it becomes lost.  I wonder if we all truly lived as if we knew, would we seek after God differently? Would our relationship with Him be altered at all?

Have you ever had a best friend? Think back to your adolescent years, when a best friend was that person that you just HAD to speak to every day or else the sky may just begin to fall. The “I tell her everything, she has my back, we talk for hours, can’t get enough of" friend.  Does any of this sound familiar?  I wonder if we applied that same attitude to God, the ultimate friend, what the results would be?  Do you fully grasp the awesome privilege of being called a friend of God? It means we are confidantes, loved beyond measure, and cherished! However, just like any other friendship, God desires those things in return from us. He wants us to confide in Him, tell Him our deepest cares, share our sadness, anger and joy with Him. He wants our love. Not just with our mouths, but in our actions towards Him.

God Almighty, all powerful, all knowing…this very God has called you friend.  John 15:15 says, I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you”.  Father, Spirit, Son are one in the same, so Christ calling us friend is in fact God calling us friend. This thought may be overwhelming for some. It's almost unimaginable to think that you can talk to God…just talk. No need for the “thou, thee, thus” lingo.  God desires our time to just be with Him; to enjoy that intimate moment that is shared between just the two of us.  It makes His heart glad when we commit to prayer time! The moment I came to that understanding, my prayer life changed. I remember I used to feel I needed to have great “prayer words”  & be able to recite verses as I prayed & all this mumbo jumbo.  Once I entered into praise, thanking Him & just began to talk to God, I saw the change in my intimacy with Him. The essence of prayer time is you & God spending time. As I learned that, God and I became the best of best friends! I am not saying earthly best friends are not great or valuable - they are.  Nevertheless, if God is not your first & foremost, if He is not who you first think to call on when you are in need, who you air out your frustrations to or who you rejoice with when something awesome happens in your life, then it’s time for a friendship evaluation! Chances are God is not the one who went M.I.A in the friendship. Abraham was called a friend of God, not because he stood sinless before Him, but because he was devoted, because he was obedient, because he was faithful.

Take a note from Abraham and devote yourself to the ultimate friend. Live in obedience and walk faithfully with God. Be so overwhelmed by His desire to call you friend that you take the utmost advantage of this privilege. To say He is worth it, would be an understatement!

Answer the call.
